At First Light - Ellen Rowe - SMP-186 - Grade 2 - $42.00 *
This is a lovely rock ballad featuring alto saxophone throughout. Ellen is a superb composer who knows how to write for young bands and still create fresh, interesting and beautiful music. The melody will stick with you, and your band will love playing this one. Full Score/parts for 5-4-4-4 . (Tk. 10 on CD 106)

Back Woods - Oliver Nelson - Grade 4-5 - SMP-390 - $52.00
Written to feature Phil Woods, this Jazz Waltz features alto saxophone and gives you the opportunity to explore the use of clarinets in the saxophone section. As usual with Nelson's music, this is a catchy, wonderful, swinging piece, full of surprises. Your band will really enjoy playing this one.

Black, Brown and Beautiful - Oliver Nelson - Grade 4 - SMP 373 - $42.00 *
This chart is recorded by Oliver Nelson on the recording titled, "Black, Brown and Beautiful." (RCA Bluebird CD). Johnny Hodges was the guest soloist on this absolutely gorgeous alto saxophone feature. A ballad in the most classic jazz tradition, this chart is very playable, with very easy rhythms and reasonable brass ranges. 5-4-4-4 (Tk. 6 on CD 108)

Elegy for Alto - Pete Rugolo - Grade 4/5 -SMP-624 - $52.00 *
From the "Progressive Jazz" period in the 1940's, this piece focused on the alto saxophone (originally played by George Weidler). It is an interesting piece which well represents this period in the band's history. 5-5-5-4

Empty Ballroom Blues - Duke Ellington - arr. Oliver Nelson - Grade 5 - SMP-398 - $52.00

Nelson wrote an album for Johnny Hodges (Black, Brown & Beautiful, RCA) featuring the compositions of Duke Ellington and also some of his original things. This Ellington tune just romps and stomps right from the start. The ensemble "shouts" just scream with wonderful voicings that lift you up out of your seat! There is solo space for Alto Sax (of course), Trumpet and Piano. Ellington's melody and Nelson's arrangement ...... an absolute winning combination! Your band will love this one! 5-4-4-4 (on Demo 113)

End of a Love Affair, The - arr. by Lennie Niehaus - Grade 4 - SMP-628 - $42.00 *
A magnificent alto saxophone feature. Lennie also solos on his chart on the recording "Live from the Tropicana" CD (available from Sierra Music). This is a superb arrangement, using all of the textures and power and sensitivity of the Kenton Orchestra. 5-4-4-3 (opt. 10 brass) (on Demo CD 103)

If I Could (easy version) comp. Pat Metheny / arr. Bob Curnow -SMP-120 - Grade 2-3 - $37.00 *
This arrangement is easier than the Pro version. It is a step lower and only one chorus long. It is on the "First Circle" LP. The featured solo can be played on Alto Sax, Flugelhorn, or Guitar (as originally performed by Pat). A marvelous festival contrast piece. Very easy band parts (the solo is not difficult either). All of the music is written out; there is no improvisation. (8 brass)

If I Could (Pro version) comp. Pat Metheny / arr. Bob Curnow - SMP-120 - Pro Grade 4-5 - $47.00
Pat played this at just about every concert of the Group. It is on the "First Circle" LP. The featured solo is played on Alto Saxophone. This is a two chorus version in the original key, a much more demanding chart than the first version published by Sierra. Your alto soloist will love the chance to play this one. In Lighter Vein - Bill Holman - Grade 5 - SMP 620 - $52.00
Recorded in 1954 for the recording "Kenton Showcase" , this chart is an alto saxophone feature throughout. It was originally recorded by Lee Konitz. Yet another wonderful Holman "feature" chart. (condensed score)

Indiana - arr. Bill Holman - Grade 5 - SMP-306 - $52.00
Here is another chart written for Stan Kenton (in the mid-1950's), that was never recorded by the band. It is a sensational piece, a real "flag-waver" which features alto saxophone from top to bottom. Great ensemble figures propel the soloist ever onward. This up-tempo swing chart is refreshing, with "band vs soloist", great background figures, a very hip key change and excitement throughout. A wonderful feature for your "hot" alto saxophonist. Typical, great Holman. 5-5-5-3 (on Demo CD 111)

It's Glory - Duke Ellington - arr. Oliver Nelson- Grade 5 - SMP-396 - $52.00
Nelson wrote an album for Johnny Hodges (Black, Brown & Beautiful, RCA) featuring the compositions of Duke Ellington and also some of his original things. Lover Man - arr. by Bill Russo - Grade 5 - SMP-728 - $47.00 (on Demo CD 114)
As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on "Sketches on Standards", this is a superb alto saxophone ballad feature, as arranged by Russo for Lee Konitz. Russo employs a dark, brooding, beautiful setting for Konitz's soaring saxophone. Included is a transcription of Lee's amazing solo. 5-5-5-3

Love Story - arr. by Willie Maiden - Grade 5 - SMP-726 - $52.00
As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on "Live at Brigham Young University", this may well be Willie's best chart done for Stan. Maiden uses a latin feel, the lush sound of the trombones and saxophones and the exciting energy of the trumpets and rhythm section to create a superb arrangement of this very special melody. Solos for piano, trombone, and
alto saxophone. 5-5-5-3

Missing You (short version) - Fred Stride - SMP-364 - Grade 2 - $42.00 *
When you first hear this beautiful melody, you'll be pleased that you chose this chart. It is a feature for alto saxophone throughout, and will make a wonderful selection for a festival program. All of the parts are very easy to play, especially the band parts. This will be a "hit" with your alto soloist! 5-4-4-4 (Tk. 29 on CD 108)

Missing You (pro version) - Fred Stride - SMP-365 - Grade 3-4 - $52.00 *
Fred wrote this version first, before creating the shorter, easier version. This also features alto saxophone throughout, but it has a long, double-time section in which the soloist can really "stretch out" and improvise on the changes. A terrific melody and a beautifully crafted chart! 5-4-4-4

Mumuki - Piazzolla / arr. Fred Sturm - Grade 4/5 - SMP 753 - $55.00
Astor Piazzolla's music lends itself well to the big band idiom, and Fred Sturm is a masterful arranger for big band. As recorded on "Libertango ! Hommage to Astor Piazzolla" (HR Big Band), this chart is a beautifully sensitive setting of a gorgeous ballad. There are different solo parts(Eb,Bb,C) for you to use in choosing your soloist. It is a solo feature throughout the chart. Sturm's orchestration and the climactic passage will tear your heart out, it is so intensely beautiful. This requires 4 clarinets and bass clarinet in the sax section with very easy-to-play parts. The brilliant scoring of Sturm creates a "must have" chart for every band's library. 5.4.4.5 (opt. vibes/bells) (on demo CD 116)

Of All Things - Bill Holman - Grade 4 - SMP-555 - $52.00 *
Holman originally wrote this chart to feature Charlie Parker with the Kenton Band in the early '50's. Based on the changes to the ever-popular "All the Things You Are", it features alto saxophone throughout (can be done with trumpet also), and the chart has all of the wonderful creativity for which Holman is so well known with his "feature charts." Penthouse Dawn, A - Oliver Nelson - Grade 3-4 - SMP-372 - $42.00 *
Oliver Nelson wrote the most beautiful melodies!! This is an alto saxophone feature and was recorded by Phil Woods and the Jazz Interactions Orchestra in 1967 (hear it on the Verve Jazz Masters 48 CD). This is a stunning composition by Nelson. The band parts are very accessible to most players. 5-4-4-4 (Tk. 8 on CD 108)

Rise and Fall of a Short Fugue, The - Bob Curnow - Grade 5/6 - SMP-551 - $52.00
The Stan Kenton Orchestra was always ahead of its time! This chart was recorded on the "Stan Kenton Plays Chicago" CD ( available from Sierra Music). It was one of two originals on the album. Stan asked Bob to write something which could be performed differently every night. The fugue is an interesting "tone row" style jazz line which leads into a free-form section which is cued by the conductor in any manner so chosen. A great piece! 5-5-5-3 (on Demo CD 109)

Stairway to the Stars - arr.by Bill Holman - Grade 5 - SMP-554 - $52.00
Another terrific "feature chart" by Bill Holman. This one was written to feature Gabe Baltazar (alto saxophone) and was recorded on the "Adventures in Jazz" album (available on CD from Sierra). It opens with a slow setting, moves into a fast tempo and returns to the pensive, beautiful, slow setting which opened the chart. Exquisite writing! Edited to be played without mellophoniums. Standard sax section. 5-4-4-3 (10 brass optional) (on Demo CD 110)

Street of Dreams - arr. by Stan Kenton - Grade 4 - SMP-623 - $32.00 *
Stan had a very definite style of arranging which, of course, was the basis of most of the music for his early bands. This chart is very simple but extremely effective. It begins with quiet trombones (5 parts), then piano, then the whole band at full volume, then an alto saxophone solo, then the sax section is featured, and then there is a quiet, wonderful ending with alto and rhythm alone. This chart was recorded many times, but it was first included in the "Portraits on Standards" album (featuring Art Pepper on the solo). A beautiful ballad and a real arranging masterpiece! 5-5-5-3 (on Demo CD 103)

When We're Together - Les Hooper - Grade 3-4 - SMP-247 - $47.00 *
As recorded on the Les Hooper Big Band's "Anything Goes", this is a lovely, contemporary, rock ballad, which features alto saxophone throughout. The band parts are very simple in content and easy to play, yet the tune and orchestration is sophisticated and attractive. If you're looking for an alto feature in a modern mode, this is the chart for you. 5-4-4-4

You Love But Once - Oliver Nelson - Grade 3-4 - SMP-369 - $47.00
There may not be a more beautiful ballad anywhere in jazz ensemble literature. This is an alto saxophone feature throughout and was recorded on the "Full Nelson" album and also included in the Verve "Jazz Masters" collection CD. This is a stunning piece, which has a decidedly orchestral/classical sound to it. The possibility of using the original clarinet, flute oboe, bass clarinet and celeste parts makes this a most interesting and special piece. Regular saxophone parts are also included if doubles are not available. 5-4-4-4

Are We There Yet? -comp. Lyle Mays / arr. Bob Curnow - SMP-135 - Grade 4 - $52.00 *
This is Lyle at his wildest!! A funk/rock, quirky tune that just burns with energy and excitement! Listen to the Curnow Big Band CD. Features tenor sax and lots of "out" sounds. Great fun! (8 brassw/opt. 10) As recorded on the Bob Curnow L.A. Big Band CD (Track 4-6 on CD 104)

But Beautiful - Grade 5 - SMP-336 - $57.00
Exactly as recorded on the "View From the Side" CD (Bill Holman Band), this wonderful chart was written for Pete Christlieb to be featured on tenor saxophone throughout. Lots of solo space for your tenor player and wonderful ensemble sections which highlight the rest of the band as well. This is a terrific "feature" for which Holman is so well known. (on demo CD 110)

Daylie's Double - Oliver Nelson Grade 4 SMP-459 $49.00
Oliver had a great feel for the "funky" jazz style which was so popular. This chart features tenor sax throughout, and was recorded on the "Fantabulous" album. It is a very easy chart to play, and it would be a great addition to any big band book. This also could be played by a smaller instrumentation as recorded by Oliver (4 saxes, 2 tpts.,2 trbs., 3 rhythm).

I Hope In Time A Change Will Come - Oliver Nelson - Grade 3 - SMP 387 - $47.00 *- SOPRANO SAXOPHONE
As recorded on the brilliant recording "A Dream Deferred" (Flying Dutchman CYL2-1449), by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra. Quite possibly the most heart-rending, beautiful melody Nelson ever wrote. It features soprano saxophone throughout (either an alto or tenor player) in a slow 12/8 feel. Performed by the California All-State Jazz Ensemble to a standing ovation. All parts are very easy to play, but don't let that cause you to think this is a "kiddie band" chart. This is Nelson at his "spiritual" best. 5-4-4-3 (on Demo CD 111)

Lonely Woman - arr. by Bill Mathieu Grade 5 SMP-576 $49.00 (on demo CD 115)
As recorded on the "Standards in Silhouette" CD, this is yet another of Bill Mathieu's classic arrangements of a great jazz standard ballad. Trombone and tenor saxophone are featured on this brilliant, highly original orchestration of a beautiful and haunting melody. Trumpet ranges are quite high, but, if you have the players, this is one ballad you'll want to play over and over again. 5-5-5-4

Ol' Man River - arr. Holman - Grade 4 - SMP-334 - $52.00 *
Holman reinvents a great tune in a swinging, very hip fashion. This chart was recorded in 1960 on the "Bill Holman's Great Big Band" (Capitol), and featured many West Coast jazz greats. Here is a typically wonderful Holman arrangement, full of swinging unison lines and full ensemble choruses which will lift you out of your seat. You'll love this one! (on demo CD 110)

Out of Nowhere - arr. by Bill Holman - Grade 4/5 - SMP 619 - $52.00 *
Holman wrote this to feature Bill Perkins in the mid '50's. It is a tenor saxophone feature throughout and a wonderful chart. Lots of blowing space and the usual swinging ensemble sections for which Holman is so well known. This chart requires 1 alto, 2 tenor and 2 baritone saxophones. 5-5-5-3 (on Demo CD 103)

Too Soon Tomorrow - Metheny / arr. Curnow - Grade 5 - SMP-221 - $47.00
This is also on the CD "Imaginary Day" by the Pat Metheny Group. Pat is the master at composing moving, gorgeous ballads, and "Too Soon Tomorrow" is no exception. Bob Curnow has orchestrated it in a sensitive and effective manner, featuring tenor sax and flugelhorn throughout. The arrangement was premiered with Carl Saunders (flugelhorn) and Bill Perkins (tenor saxophone) doing the honors. The effect of this arrangement is similar to ÒAlways and ForeverÓ, a very popular chart Metheny/Curnow. 5-4-4-4 Recently recorded on the Bob Curnow & the SWR Big Band CD (on demo CD 110)

Vida De Sueno - Bob Curnow - Grade 3/4 - SMP 757 - $55.00
This is a gorgeous feature for tenor saxophone (there is also a piano solo). Sensuous, warm, lush ..... all those good things. Set in a slow bossa-nova style, this lyrical piece will please your players and audiences alike. Very modest brass ranges (high D for tpt. 1) and easy rhythms make this chart very playable and attractive for just about any band. 5.4.4.4 (Opt. 10 brass) (on demo CD 116)

Yesterdays - arr. by Bill Holman - Grade 5 - SMP-668 - $42.00
This is a wonderful feature for tenor saxophone (as recorded by Bill Perkins). Bill (Perk) says that people ask him about this recording more than any other he has done (and thatÕs a LOT!). Holman uses the essence of this beautiful ballad, stays out of the way of the soloist, and creates one of the most successful feature ballads ever arranged. This is very sophisticated music on maybe the best album the Kenton Band ever did. Recorded on the "Contemporary Concepts" album (This music is also available from Mosaic Records in their Russo/Holman CD set.) 5-5-5-4 (on Demo CD 106)

Zoot 'n' Al Grade 5 SMP-934 $67.00
As recorded on the new CD "The Bill Holman Band Live", this chart features two tenor saxophone players throughout, playing together and separately. This is the ideal solo vehicle for your tenor players. The tempo is a bright swing, and the writing ..... as always ..... is superb. A great tribute to Zoot Sims and Al Cohn, two of the greatest in jazz history.

As recorded on the new CD "The Bill Holman Band Live", Holman has written a witty, musical, fun-filled feature for baritone saxophone. Lots of space for creative playing, and the wonderful contrapuntal writing that we come to expect from Holman. It's time to feature the foundation of your jazz band. A moderate tempo shuffle-feel makes this one swing like crazy! 5-4-4-4(on Demo CD 115)

Bari Things You Do, The - Geoff Keezer Grade 3-4 SMP-193 $47.00 *
Geoff's original music is the best! It is unique, very melodic and extremely interesting. Music from a great jazz pianist. This chart features baritone saxophone throughout. Very moderate ranges for brass. If you want to feature your bari player, this is for you. Based on changes of "The Very Thought of You". 5-4-4-4 (opt. vibes) (Tk. 34 on CD 107)

It Could Happen To You - arr. Lennie Niehaus - Grade 4 - SMP-582 - $59.00
As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on "Adventures In Standards", this is a wonderful, swinging chart on a great tune. As usual, Lennie does a great job arranging it, with terrific section work and limited ranges for the brass (written high D for 1st Tpt). There is a nice, lengthy solo for Baritone Sax. 5-5-5-3 (can be played with 8 brass) (on Demo 113)

Peacocks, The - J. Rowles, arr. Holman Grade 3 and 4 (solo) SMP-176 $42.00 *
This is a beautifully haunting melody, scored for bass clarinet soloist (opt. bar. sax part incl.). Except for the solo part, the chart is not at all demanding of the other players. Flute and soprano sax doubles. On the CD "A View from the Side." (on demo CD 105)

Rhapsody In Blue - arr. by Bill Holman - Grade 5 - SMP-727 - $52.00
As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on "Live at Brigham Young University", this is a rare baritone saxophone solo feature throughout. The arrangement by Holman is marvelous, opening and closing with a slow statement of the theme, and roaring in an up-tempo setting in the middle of the chart. This is a very exciting arrangement of Gershwin's unforgettable piece. 5-5-5-3

Smith Named Greg, A - Hank Levy - Grade 4-5 - SMP-562 - $52.00
This is a wonderful feature for baritone saxophone! It was recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on the "Kenton '76" CD. It opens with a slow, pensive melody (bass and soloist only) and continues with backgrounds through the rest of the melody. The soloist then sets a brighter tempo with a 4-bar break, and the soloist and rhythm section continue for a while until the band is cued in. Limited ranges (except for one measure in 1st tpt.) make this a very accessible chart for most bands. Hurray for Hank Levy! 5-5-5-3 (on Demo CD 111)

CLARINET

Ballad for Benny - Oliver Nelson SMP-377 Grade 3-4 $45.00 *
Oliver Nelson wrote the most beautiful melodies! This is a clarinet feature (how about that?), and was recorded by Phil Woods and the Oliver Nelson's Jazz Interactions Orchestra (hear it on the Verve Jazz Masters 48 CD. See pg. 41 for CD information). This is a wonderful tune! The band parts are very accessible to most players. A nice, easy swing feel. 5-4-4-4 (Tk. 3 on CD 109)

Flute Salad - Oliver Nelson - SMP-378 - Grade 2 - $45.00 *
An easy swing chart which was originally written for 4 flutes and bass clarinet in the woodwind section. WAIT ! We've included those original parts and alternate sax parts which really work just as well. If you have flute players available, this would make a great feature for them. If not, use the sax parts and call it "Sax Salad". (hear it on the "Sound Pieces" CD). The band parts are very easy to play. 5-4-4-3 (Tk. 7 on CD 109)

Opus In Pastels - Stan Kenton - Grade 3 - SMP-659 - $32.00 *
The all-time, classic saxophone section feature. Originally recorded for the first time in 1940, it has been recorded many, many times since (the latest recording was "Stan Kenton in London" (Decca Records) in 1972. 5 saxes-3 rhythm (on Demo CD 104)

Reed Rapture - Stan Kenton - Grade 3-4 - SMP-561 - $37.00
We are proud to publish another one of Stan Kenton's ground-breaking saxophone section features. "Opus in Pastels" is already in print, but this piece actually pre-dates "Opus in Pastels" and was included in the "Kenton Era" collection of recordings. The piece perfectly demonstrates the thinking of the young Stan Kenton. Written for saxophones and rhythm only. 5-0-0-3 (on Demo CD 111)

Sax Accord - Fred Stride - Grade 3 - SMP-248 - $47.00 *
Here is a wonderful section feature for saxophones in a ballad style. Fred has written a beautiful melody and harmonies without making the music difficult to play. Very limited brass ranges and no improvised solos make this a chart for everyone. Here's a chance to show off the saxes without a lot of hassle. September Song - arr. by Stan Kenton - Grade 3 - SMP-622 - $32.00 *
The Kenton Band had many "hits" over the years, and a couple of them involved the whole band singing. This was one of those charts. Now, if your band isnÕt into singing (maybe they should be), then this is the perfect vehicle for your vocalist. Pitched in Ab. Trumpets get a "breather" and the trombones and saxophones shine as section. A wonderfully relaxing, lush chart. 5-5-5-3 (on Demo CD 103)

All the Things You Are - arr. Gerry Mulligan - Grade 3 - SMP-577 - $47.00 *
One of those "mystery" charts that hardly anyone knows about, this chart is a beauty. Mulligan was a master at creating moods and using wonderful chord substitutions, as he did in this medium ballad. The arrangement features Trumpet throughout (written to feature Buddy Childers), and it was played very often by the Kenton Band. The brass ranges and rhythms for all are very reasonable (written Bb above the staff for Trumpet). This is a VERY impressive chart that is easy to play. 5-5-5-4 (on Demo CD 113)

Always and Forever -comp. Pat Metheny / arr. Bob Curnow - SMP-142 - Grade 4 - $42.00 *
This beautiful ballad is featured on Pat's newest recording "Secret Story" and has been scored to highlight solo statements by flugelhorn, guitar or alto saxophone (your choice). It is a warm, pensive ballad with lush, moving harmonies in the Metheny vernacular, and scored for ease of performance and maximum emotional impact. As recorded on the Bob Curnow L.A. Big Band CD (Track 4-7 on CD 104)

America the Beautiful - arr. Bob Curnow - Grade 4 - SMP-115 - $32.00 *
A re-scoring of a Kenton original (richer harmony, better key). Soft flugelhorn opening building to a tremendous climax. Can be program- med at any community or school event. RECORDED BY THE U.S. ARMY JAZZ AMBASSADORS on their CD .... "A Kenton Tribute." Hear it on our demo CD! (10 brass) (on demo CD 106)

Another Life - Pat Metheny - arr. Bob Curnow - Grade 4 - SMP-219 - $59.00 *
Bob Curnow is very well known for his wonderful arrangements of Metheny's music, and this chart will only enhance that reputation. This is another superb ballad, very much in the Metheny mode. It is scored to feature flugelhorn throughout, but there are optional solo parts for Alto Sax or Guitar available also. The original Metheny recording of this composition is on the Grammy winning CD "Speaking of Now" by the Pat Metheny Group. Pat's recorded, beautifully improvised solo has been transcribed by Curnow, and it is included with the solo part. 5-4-4-4 (with optional 10 brass parts if needed) (on Demo CD 113)

Awakening, The - Metheny & Mays / arr. Curnow - Grade 5 - SMP-220 - $67.00
Bob Curnow is well known for his orchestrations of Pat Metheny's music, and this arrangement will fit right in with "The First Circle" and "Minuano." This is the last cut on the CD "Imaginary Day" by the Pat Metheny Group. Curnow's chart is faithful to the composition, and it is nine and a half minutes of big band excitement. Solo space for piano and trumpet. The piece opens and closes with a tip of the hat to a Celtic style of music. The harmonies and meter changes are reminiscent of the well known "The First Circle." A monumental piece of big band jazz. This was written for Les' fantastic Chicago band. There are also piano solos. Woodwind players must be good doublers and it is well worth the effort. This is certainly one of Hooper's most dynamic and interesting creations (among a great many)! Quintessence - Hank Levy - Grade 5 - SMP-646 - $62.00

Of all the pieces Hank wrote for the Stan Kenton Orchestra, this is arguably the best one. This is recorded on the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band 2005 CD. It is a melodious work, set in 5/4 throughout. There is a long, wonderful section for trumpet (or flugelhorn) solo. The middle "baroque" sounding contrapuntal section is a masterpiece. This piece is a feature for solo flugelhorn (written for Fred Berry). It is a slow, pensive, lovely melody, set in an almost polytonal manner. Lots of lush sounds reminescent of Ellington and Kenton, all at the same time. There is a quiet, beautiful ending. Stan Kenton had a certain touch in his arranging that stood out. He took a simple, slow-swinging approach to this great Neal Hefti tune, and it was one of the most popular charts played by the band in the 1970's. Piano takes the melody, while the trombones set the harmonic and rhythmic groove. This is a wonderful piece to program, because it is so different than most charts. 5-5-5-3

Recorded in 1947 and included in the "Milestones" LP, this piece is a gorgeous melody (one of Pete's best known). As commissioned (and recorded) by the SWR Big Band of Stuttgart, Germany, this is an extended arrangement based on a gorgeous melody by Pat Metheny. The saxophone players double on flute (sax 1), clarinets (sax 2-4) and bass clarinet (sax 5). There is solo space for piano, tenor sax and trombone, as the chart moves from a rubato ballad, to a bossa feel, to a rock ballad feel, and back to the rubato again. This is a highly, emotionally charged piece which makes a wonderful addition to any program. Limited brass ranges. The chart also includes an interweaving of Metheny's pensive melody "Tell Her You Saw Me." The CD on which this piece is recorded is "Towednack", Bob Curnow and the SWR Big Band (available from Sierra Music). 5-4-4-4

This piece has been in the catalog for a while, but it has been totally recomposed and notated in Finale. It now comes with a full score (and parts). It was written for Stan Kenton, and it features a written piano solo throughout the piece. This is a slow ballad, written in the Kenton tradition. GUITAR

Invention for Guitar and Trumpet - Bill Holman - Grade 5/6 - SMP-634 - $52.00
Once used in the "Blackboard Jungle" movie, this piece is one of Holman's earliest compositions to be recorded by Kenton. It was written for Maynard Ferguson and Sal Salvador and recorded in 1952. Recorded on the Kenton "New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm" CD (available from Sierra Music).

BASS

Bernie's Tune - arr. by Gene Roland Grade 5 SMP-585 $57.00 (on demo CD 115)
This was recorded on the Stan Kenton Orchestra CD "Live at the Tropicana." It may be the best chart Gene Roland ever did for Stan. Although it opens with a bass solo, there is also solo space for alto and tenor saxophones. The ensemble writing will knock your socks off! Check this out, and I'm sure you will agree, this is a great chart on a great jazz standard.

Les Hooper has a way of creating charming, interesting and playful music and not making it too hard to play. This chart is very easy to play in terms of rhythm and ranges. The solo bass part, however, will require a player who has a reasonable skill level on the instrument. Bass is featured throughout. Bass features are hard to find! 5-4-4-3 (on demo CD 110)

Artistry in Percussion - Pete Rugolo - Grade 4/5 - SMP-635 - $47.00
Written to feature Shelly Manne. A great drum feature. It also contains a nice trombone solo. Very "showy" piece. Great for an historical look back on any Kenton "tribute" concert.One of the most fascinating drum set features ever written. From the exciting and innovative 1946 recordings. Git, The (Count Basie Orchestra) - Grade 5 - SMP-335 - $52.00
This chart was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the CD "I Told You So." It is a feature for your drummer. It also has solos for tenor sax and piano. This rip-roaring chart, full of wonderful linear writing, has "smoking" shout choruses, one after the other, which bring this exciting chart to a close. This is a great "closer" for any jazz program. YouÕve got to have this chart in your library! (on demo CD 110)

Only the Greatest - Bill Holman - Grade 4-5 - SMP-311 - $57.00
As written for and performed by the Buddy Rich Big Band, here is the long-missing chart that Holman wrote to feature "The Great One"..... Buddy Rich. It is a terrific, swinging chart with solo space, not only for drums, but also for tenor sax, trumpet and trombone. This is another superb chart by Holman, who has contributed to virtually every big band library on the jazz scene. This is a wonderful piece! 5-4-4-4

Spring Wind - Geoff Keezer - Grade 5 - SMP-192 - $57.00
Finally!! A NEW drum set feature which really shows off your drummer. Steve Houghton uses this in his performances. It opens with a Cute (Hefti) - like feel (brushes and a neat, light be-bop line), goes into a Latin feel and returns to Swing. There is also solo space for trombone. This was originally arranged as a vocal chart and has been published to also feature vocal or any one of a number of soloists (your choice). It is a lush ballad, full of rich, warm textures of the trombone section and saxophones. There is also a harmon-muted trumpet solo behind the gorgeous trombone soli on the second chorus. This is the melody that is so very much loved most people, and it makes a great program choice. 5-4-4-4

Lot of Livin' To Do - arr. by Holman (VOCAL CHART) Grade 4-5 SMP-588 $52.00
As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra and Jean Turner, this chart used to be Jean's opener when she sang with the Kenton Band. Holman sets the mood right from the top, and things swing on from there. This is a wonderful vocal chart for either female or male vocalist.
